OUR FOCUS AREAS
JUST LAUNCHED: CONSTITUTIONAL REPAIR HUB
We have 5 focus areas, listed below. Our Constitutional Repair hub was launched on 19 June 2024 to coincide with the conference ‘A Playbook for Reinstating the Rule of Law’ at the University of Freiburg on 20-21 June 2024. The other focus area hubs will be launched in the coming months.
DEMOCRATIC DECAY: A GLOBAL CONCERN
For years, the erosion and active dismantling of liberal democracy has worried democrats worldwide, reducing citizens’ freedoms, voice, and protections from arbitrary power. We’ve been tracking these trends since 2018 and two things are clear: negative trends get the most attention; and navigating the noisy and fragmented space of democracy research can be a bewildering challenge.
WE EQUIP & CONNECT EXPERTS WORLDWIDE
When it comes to protecting and re-thinking our democracies, knowledge really is power - and sharing knowledge effectively is vital. Think of us as the Lonely Planet for democracy analysis: we curate and connect evidence from both academic research (mainly law and political science) and policy analysis. Pooling insights from multiple fields and world regions maximises our capacity to take action.
WE’RE EMBRACING EVIDENCE-BASED HOPE
Launched in June 2024, the Demoptimism Project seeks to foster evidence-based hope by not only clearly identifying the many challenges facing democracy worldwide, but also showcasing the expanding work globally to resist threats and to repair, renew, and strengthen our democracies. While there is no silver bullet, solutions do exist. Practical hope helps us see new possibilities.
