Join Unlock Democracy and a cast of brilliant speakers for a discussion on Democracy After Lockdown.

About this Event

The path we take out of lockdown is down to what each of us do right now. The shape of democracy after lockdown is up to us.

Join Unlock Democracy and special guest speakers to discuss the future of our democracy after Covid-19.

The session will include presentations from:

  • Adrienne Buller Common Wealth on 'Commoning the Company'

  • Dr. Oliver Escobar University of Edinburgh Edinburgh Futures Institute on ‘Shared crises and the future of democratic innovation’

These will be followed by a Q&A.

Covid-19 has already fundamentally altered the relationship between the state and the individual. The government has taken action it would not have dreamed of taking just weeks earlier. In Britain’s highly centralised and remote political system, this change presents threats to civil liberties, accountable government, workers’ rights, and the health of the most vulnerable.

The UK government’s new measures have sparked nationwide conversations about the fundamental values we hold as citizens and has exposed underlying issues in our political system, and our democracy.

A lot has changed since we started monitoring the proposed Constitution, Democracy and Rights Commission. When it appeared on page 48 of the Conservative Manifesto it quickly became clear that we were looking at something sinister - something that could both limit democracy and further entrench Conservative power in this country.

Now is an essential time to start the discussion about the post-pandemic world we would like to build.

This event accompanies the release of our pamphlet, ‘Page 48 Explained: the Conservative Manifesto Plans for Our Democracy’. We'll send each person who registers for this event a digital copy beforehand.
