In the late 1980s, the eminent political scientist Robert Dahl authored 'Democracy and Its Critics' which debated fundamental questions about the possibilities and limits of democratic government. This workshop aims to contribute to the ongoing work of understanding democracy.

'Democracy' has long been recognised as a complicated and challenging project. In the late 1980s, the eminent political scientist Robert Dahl authored Democracy and Its Critics, a thought-provoking book that debated fundamental questions about the possibilities and limits of democratic government. Much has changed in the years since Dahl's book appeared, and therefore a thorough re-evaluation of the democratic project is timely. This workshop aims to contribute to the ongoing work of understanding democracy. It will explore the challenges facing democracies today as a result of recent economic, social and political developments, including globalisation; economic stagnation; the emergence of new communication technologies; the erosion of traditional social cleavages; and the collapse of trust in political elites and institutions. As well as discussing such contemporary challenges and how they impact on democratic systems, participants will be invited to explore the capacity of modern democracies to solve the problems they face.
Structure
The event will be a 1-day workshop hosted at Deakin's Burwood Campus (Burwood Corporate Centre) on July 19. Please submit paper proposals by 20 May 2018. If you would like to attend the workshop without presenting a paper, please register by 1 June 2018.
Keynote lecture will be given by Prof. Leonardo Morlino (LUISS, Rome).
Participation
Academics and PhD students who are researching the state of contemporary democracy, from either a theoretical or empirical standpoint, are invited to submit papers and/or to attend. There is no cost to register and a sandwich lunch (and snacks) will be provided. The number of speakers will be capped at 10 and attendees at approximately 25.
